Nerve transfers have fostered a paradigm shift in the way we manage nerve injuries over the past three decades, offering more complete functional recovery than historical techniques. This presentation will provide an overview of nerve injury, timing and indications for surgery and review the current evidence for common nerve transfers. Pearls and pitfalls will be discussed using a case-based approach. The crucial role of rehabilitation in obtaining favorable outcomes after nerve transfer surgery will also be highlighted.

  • Review the pathophysiology of nerve injuries and patient selection for nerve transfers.
  • Review the evidence for commonly employed nerve transfers as well as with strategies to ensure success.
  • Describe the importance of therapy in achieving optimal outcomes after nerve transfers.
